Project Summary
Haiti, located in the Greater Antilles Archipelago, is ranked by the United Nations Human Development Index as among the Least Developed Countries (LDC). The infant mortality rate was13.2% in 1997 and currently, more than half of the population is illiterate. Illnesses such as malaria are widespread. Malnutrition is on the rise. Yet, the poor do not have enough money to consult a doctor or to buy the required medicines.
AMURT cooperated with local doctors to alle - viate the suffering of the poor. Our team con - sisted of seven staff members: doctors, nurses and assistants. We hired a medicine bus and built a medicine store in Port-au-Prince. For three years, our team provided free care to the sick and poor; each day our team treated up to 150 patients.
Due to poverty most of our patients could not afford to send their children to school. Without education, these children would end up on the streets. In order to give them a better future, AMURT constructed a primary school. Further - more, we drilled a borehole to ensure access to safe drinking water for the schoolchildren. In collaboration with World Food Programme, we distributed food to the pupils. Today, over 300 children are enrolled in our school.
