Project Summary
On August 15, 2007, a massive earthquake levelled 85% of Pisco, a coastal city of over 100,000 people located 200 km south of Lima. The 3 minute long, 8.0 magnitude quake killed 503 people, severely injured 1042, and destroyed 34,410 homes.
Two years later, the people of Pisco continue to rebuild and AMURT is helping. The majority of the very poor still lack adequate housing, drinking water, and sanitary facilities.
In 2008, AMURT financed the building of 50 transitional housing. They are in areas less susceptible to earthquake damage, constructed of materials that can withstand earthquakes rather than the traditional mud adobe, and are equipped with sanitary facilities and electrical installations. There will be more earthquakes; the area is a very active seismic zone.
To reduce death, injuries, and property damage in future natural disasters, AMURT is training local officials how to prepare for and mitigate the effect of future earthquakes.
