In June 2001, an earthquake affected the southern region of Peru. AMURT’s interventioned, focusing on the reconstruction of a remote village at an altitude of 3,000-metre, named “Nueva Esperanza”.
As a result of the earthquake the entire village was destroyed; there was a lack ofshelter, food, water and basic commodities. AMURT’s primary action involved a phase of emergency aid,, then the organization moved on to the reconstruction of the village.
First of all, in collaboration with local authorities, AMURT participated in a process of urban planning in order to deal with the issue of land ownership. Secondly, it provided the construction materials and the necessary expertise of architects and construction specialists. The villagers actively participated in the reconstruction of their houses: they were trained how to construct clay brick houses.
The houses were constructed in accordance with strict technical guidelines and included plots for growing vegetables from seeds that AMURT distributed for cultivation.
In 2006, AMURT constructed the first school in the village.
