Context
“Rasarit”/Sunrise – assisted living for senior citizens is a project based in the town of Staseni, aiming to serve the most vulnerable category of the population of sick and/or physically disabled elderly persons who cannot cater for themselves.
The Day Care Center Rasarit offers the following activities:
- Functioning of public kitchen, public bathroom, public laundry room, activity center, massage, daily gymnastics, assisting in total 270 senior citizens a year.
- Socialization activities – there are 15–25 elderly a day (except Fridays, when this number goes up to 45 a day) who have the opportunity to come for interaction and time together; they are offered a range of activities as TV, indoor games, handicrafts, music, sports, entertaining programs and competitions, performances. They can also take part in various interest clubs (chess, knitting, humor, poetry etc.)
The center seeks to involve the local community into the project implementation so that the problems of the most vulnerable group of population become visible to the wider community and start being addressed and dealt with. A continuously growing involvement of the state authorities is taking place so that the project does not replace the governmental functions but rather stimulates it for gradual assumption of responsibility for this social group.
It is also to stimulate the local authorities and other NGOs working in the same field of activities to start similar projects throughout Moldova and to teach them how such an institution should be organized in order to better fulfill the needs of the aging population and increase the quality and standards of care in Moldova.
In 2010 the Rasarit center was visited 10127 times in total. The public kitchen provided services 8561 times (at the center 6499 times and at home 2062 times). The public bathroom provided services 1973 times. In average 8 people were using the public showers daily, some of them, disabled, being transported to the Day care center. The laundry washed a total of 1356 washes per year 2010.
